The adrenal glands are located at the top of both kidneys. The adrenal glands receive hormonal "messages" from the pituitary gland (see Pituitary Gland) and then produce corticosteroid hormones, or cortisol, and other metabolic and stress related hormones. As part of the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis (see Role of Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) Axis) they play a critical role in the body’s response to stress and cortisol production.
