Isotretinoin is a prescription retinoid, derived from Vitamin A. While its method of action is not completely understood, studies suggest it has an anti-inflammatory action, reduces sebum production, and shrinks sebaceous glands. Studies also suggest that low dose isotretinoin treatment can help control rosacea symptoms. However, due to links to birth defects and possible links to increased depression and suicide, in some countries it is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain a prescription for isotretinoin.
