The Hypothalamus & Pituitary

The pituitary gland is located at the base of the brain, hanging below and from the hypothalamus. It receives hormonal "messages" from the hypothalamus (see Hypothalamus) and then produces hormonal "messages" itself for transmission to various parts of the body, including the adrenal glands (see Adrenal Glands), site of cortisol production. As part of the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis (see Role of Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) Axis) the pituitary gland plays a critical role in the body’s response to stress and cortisol production.
